Our surgeons work with the most experienced access surgeons in the country to use a muscle preserving techniques during the mi-TLIF procedures.

What happens during Mi-TLIF?

An incision is made in the back of the spine. Often times the procedure can be completed through a 2 inch incision. Once the level is localized and confirmed we then mark the location of the screws utilizing a muscle sparing trajectory. Then the surgeon will perform a laminectomy to decompress the spinal sac and the nerve roots. Then while protecting the nerve roots, the disc is identified. The damaged disc material is removed and a spacer is then placed between the vertebrae to maintain alignment, provide indirect decompression, and serve as a conduit for the fusion. The screws are then placed and connected by a rod to stabilize the segment.

Why mi-TLIF?

There are a number of benefits to minimally invasive TLIF over traditional approaches.

  • With a Mi-TLIF, the muscle trauma is minimal due to screw trajectory
  • The spinal nerves are identified and directly decompressed to minimize tissue trauma.
  • Preservation of the muscles leads to a faster recovery and minimal blood loss.
