Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement in the Dallas Area
Did you know that Dr. Neil Shah at Texas Spine Associates was one of the first spine surgeons in DFW to perform cervical disc replacement surgery. He has presented and educated physicians throughout the metroplex about the benefits of disc replacement surgery. At Texas Spine Associates our surgeons pride themselves on being able to provide patients with the latest in motion preservation technology and minimally invasive surgery.
What is Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery?
Anterior Cervical Disc Replacement, is a surgery to remove a herniated or degenerative disc in the neck. Compared to traditional cervical fusion, during disc replacement surgery, a device is placed the mimics the natural motion of the disc.
There are two primary goals that are intended to be accomplished with the procedure. The first goal is to decompress the spinal cord and nerve roots. This is done by removing the disc material and bone spurs that are causing the compression. The secondary goal is to place a device that preserves the motion and mechanics of that segment.
Advantages of Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery
Compared to traditional spinal fusions:
- Earlier return to work
- Decreased blood loss
- Decreased length of hospital stay
- Decreased rate of reoperation
- Diminished postoperative pain/reliance on opioids
