What is Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery?

Cervical Disc Replacement is a surgery to remove a herniated disc or degenerative disc in the neck. Compared to traditional cervical fusion, during disc replacement surgery, a device is placed that mimics the natural motion of the disc.

There are two primary goals that are intended to be accomplished with the procedure. The first goal is to decompress the spinal cord and nerve roots. This is done by removing the disc material and bone spurs that are causing the compression. The secondary goal is to place a device that preserves the motion and mechanics of that segment.

Simplify Cervical Disc

Simplify Cervical Disc is the most clinically effective cervical total disc replacement (cTDR). It is the only cTDR to achieve clinical superiority at primary endpoints for 1- and 2-levels compared to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF).

Studies found Simplify Cervical Disc had a 1-level success rate of 93%, compared to 73.6% for ACDF, and a 2-level success rate of 86.7%, compared to 77.1% for ACDF.

Simplify Design and Material

Simplify Cervical Disc is designed to treat conditions and symptoms associated with cervical disc degeneration, while preserving motion of the spine. Disc height options are designed to closely match patients’ healthy disc spaces.

Simplify Cervical Disc is made of PEEK (medical-grade plastic) endplates with titanium coating and a ceramic core, which allow for imaging after surgery using magnetic resonance imaging* (MRI) instead of a CT scan.
